The Smurfs Christmas Special is a 1980 Christmas special based on the comic strip characters originally created by Pierre Culliford (known as Peyo) in 1958. It is the first Christmas special of "The Smurfs", and it aired on NBC (in an hour-long format) on December 4, 1980, just two days after Thanksgiving. It was directed by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr., who also directed the feature-length film "The Smurfs and The Magic Flute" (with Hanna-Barbera handling production), the series pilot, the season one episode "The Mystery Smurf", and this special's sequel. This special introduces Sassette to the series, as well as her father, Magiman. It also provides backstory for Gargamel's hatred for The Smurfs - he had previously gone to St. Nicholas' orphanage to steal a baby, but he stumbled upon the now-familiar blue creatures instead, and found that by eating one of them, they taste terrible. The special has been released on DVD in Region 1 with a new musical score by Tim Elliott as part of a Smurfs collection with "The Smurfs and the Magic Flute", "The Smurfs and the Double-Crossing TV Movie", and "The Smurfs: A Christmas Carol". "A Christmas Carol" is an animated feature-length adaptation of Charles Dickens' famous novella, directed by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass. cfa1e77820
